A Daily Routine to Relieve Stress

Stress shows up when we least expect it. It can be a pain even when we do. So how do we manage stress when it seems so daily routine? We can practice mindfulness. And we can do it daily.

What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is a way to focus on the moment. This means paying attention to how we feel, what we think, and how we act. Paying attention improves memory and sharpens our focus. It is a key element in mindful practices. So what exactly is mindfulness?

  • Mindfulness is being aware of your feelings.
  • It is catching your thoughts as they come and then letting them go. Focus on the now and less about the future or the past.
  • It is acceptance of our feelings without judgment. We don’t need to immediately jump to changing how we feel. Rather, accept it and be with it.
  • We can take in the moment–both positive and negative thoughts and feelings. Don’t dwell or judge, but be.

How can I manage stress through mindfulness?

  1. You become more aware of your thoughts. Often, we don’t always realize what we’re thinking. This can lead to unknown stress and the causes of stress.
  2. We can take a moment to think before reacting. Sometimes our first instinct is to react to an action or thought. We can be still in the moment, and our reaction will follow. This leads to less frustration and negative consequences.
  3. Relaxation comes with ease. Being in the moment helps us relax, process our emotions, and think through our thoughts.
  4. Take a deep breath. Now continue to breathe. Breathing is a part of mindfulness, and deep breathing helps us to re-center and calm our stress.
  5. Stress is common when we worry about the future. It is frequent when we judge our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. We can take a moment to breathe, acknowledge how we feel, and let go of the future, and stress seems to disappear.
