Let’s take a closer look at the process.

What is happiness?

First, we need to acknowledge that happiness is a state of contentment. It is unrealistic to think of it as a state of perfection. And it’s not romanticizing our flaws. Happiness is accepting the moment. We can’t always change our situation, but we can change our happiness. We can appreciate the moment through a state of contentment.

So, what is contentment?

Acceptance. We aren’t talking about defeat. Acceptance is a powerful concept of understanding our situation. We can’t change our life in a day. If each day we accept what we can’t change, then we are on the path of contentment.

Is it that simple? Yes and no. A good place to start is through thankfulness. It is a crucial step to contentment. We should learn to have gratitude no matter the day or even the year. Simply considering the things to be grateful for can change our mindset. And eventually, sometimes sooner than we think–we will create happiness.

How to manifest gratitude

We can be grateful for the past, present, and future. You can identify parts of your past to be thankful for. Is this hard? If so, you aren’t alone. Think back to Thanksgiving. What are some things you’ve been thankful for throughout the years? Acknowledge the things worthy of gratitude.

Express gratitude for the present. Each day, write down 1-3 thoughts of gratitude. Be specific. We add meaning through details. Nothing is too small for thankfulness.

Look forward to the future. Do you have plans next week? Or can we have gratitude for the mere existence of a future? I think so. Focus on present gratitude, and keep moving forward. Keep your mind on the future, and think about how today’s gratitude can affect tomorrow.

Be Happy
